Early in SEEC’s history, Dee Carlstrom was hired to develop a curriculum, Museum Magic, based on a vision of monthly themes that crossed the entire Smithsonian Institution and utilized resources throughout the museum. The curriculum continues to serve as a resource even as the school has transitioned to a using an emergent curriculum model.

Museum Magic includes 15 themes based on several central concepts. For each central concept there are vocabulary words, community activities, museum activities, and classroom activities including art, sensory, movement, dramatic play, math, science and fine motor.

Themes included in Museum Magic:

  • Me, Myself & I
  • Real and Pretend
  • Change
  • Long, Long Ago
  • Let’s Explore
  • Ecology
  • Transportation
  • Clothes We Wear
  • We Build Buildings
  • Creative Minds
  • Space
  • Around the World
  • In the City
  • Communication
  • Water, Water Everywhere

SEEC licenses Museum Magic for $500 a year, which  includes a consultation about how SEEC currently uses Museum Magic within our emergent curriculum framework. Those organizations that license Museum Magic also receive 20% to our workshops throughout the year.
